An exhibition opening invitation is a statement of aesthetic intent before a guest sets foot in the gallery. The design, typography, and language of the invitation should reflect the character of the exhibition itself. A contemporary abstract show calls for a different invitation than a traditional portrait retrospective or a design museum product showcase. This guide covers the wording templates, design principles, and logistical details for every type of gallery opening and exhibition event.

Private View vs. Public Opening
Most gallery exhibitions have two distinct openings: the private view (or vernissage) for invited guests - collectors, press, peers, supporters - and the subsequent public opening. The private view invitation should feel exclusive and personal. The public opening announcement can be broader and more promotional.
For private view invitations, address recipients personally where possible. An invitation to a collector that begins "Dear [Name]" rather than "Dear Friend" or no salutation at all creates a meaningful difference in how valued the recipient feels. Curated guest relationships matter enormously to commercial galleries and artist careers.
Design Principles for Exhibition Invitations
Exhibition opening invitations are themselves a design object. The invitation design should complement the aesthetic of the exhibition - not compete with it, and not be generic. For a contemporary show, a minimal, bold design with one striking image detail and clean sans-serif typography works well. For a classical or figurative exhibition, more traditional type treatments and a full reproduction of a key work are appropriate.
The most important design element is the reproduction of a key work from the show. A strong, well-reproduced image of one compelling piece does more to drive attendance than any description of the work. If the gallery has strong photography of the artist and studio as well, include one image of the artist alongside one image of the work.
Print quality matters for gallery invitations more than almost any other event type. An exhibition that presents work of visual quality deserves an invitation printed to the same standard. High-quality offset printing on good card stock is the minimum for serious gallery events.
What to Include in Every Exhibition Invitation
Every exhibition opening invitation must include: gallery or venue name and address, exhibition title and artist name(s), opening event date and times, run dates of the full exhibition, RSVP information (required or not), and whether the event is ticketed or free. If the gallery is difficult to find or has limited parking, include practical access information or a link to directions.
For international exhibitions or museums with significant audiences who travel, include information about accommodation options or links to the museum's visitor information pages. Arriving from out of town for an exhibition opening is common among serious collectors and arts professionals.
